The Problem With Believing in the Return of God

The problem with believing in the return of God
hinging on the end of the present earth
is that it permits complacency.
It allows you
to throw up your hands when things seem impossible.
It distracts you with the superficial--feeding the poor,
helping the sick--
you spend your life cursing and
vainly hacking at the growth above the ground,
while ignoring the roots.
When you say: "Thank God the Lord is coming back."
It takes away the weight of your responsibility
To society,
To participate in society,
To try to make the world a better place,
Because you believe you are not of this world
And that this world must end
You have no investment in laboring to preserve it
Or to improve it.
